The greatest sporting event in history

July 16, 2026 joelmcneece

This year’s World Cup has shattered every preconceived notion of what a sporting event can achieve, cementing its legacy as the greatest sports event in history.

Sounds a bit hyperbolic, but it’s not. This tournament has smashed every record from viewership, to attendance, to more importantly, stunningly, exciting moments on the pitch.

From the opening whistle last month to this Sunday’s climactic world championship, this expanded 48-team format has transformed a mere tournament into a breathtaking global carnival across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

All the pundits complained prior to the tournament that expanding the field would dilute the product, but instead, it has produced a competitive drama, parity, and cultural passion never seen before in football history.

The true magic of this World Cup has been the unprecedented rise of the global underdog. Expanding to 48 teams did not lower the quality; it allowed nations that were previously locked out to prove they belong on the world stage.

Fans witnessed legendary, unforgettable moments like tournament newcomers Cape Verde taking powerhouse Spain to the max in Atlanta, or the Democratic Republic of Congo deadlocking a star-studded Portugal side.

Giants like Brazil were sent packing early by a relentless Norway squad led by Erling Haaland, proving that the gap between football’s elite and the rest of the world has officially vanished. The expanded format gave smaller nations a lifeline, and they responded by delivering the highest-stakes drama of the century.

This World Cup has also produced an unrivaled atmosphere when the world needed it most. From the Azteca, to Vancouver, to Atlanta, Seattle, Boston Dallas, Los Angeles and Miami, this tournament has woven together a vibrant tapestry of soccer cultures.

We have witnessed visitors from around the world be captivated by the United States. Fans from Scotland, Norway, England, Netherlands, Argentina, Japan and so many more have turned every host city into an absolute festival.

Our most iconic NFL stadiums have been packed to maximum capacity week after week as the tournament shattered historic attendance and TV rating records. It has effectively proved that football/soccer is no longer a growing sport in North America, it is a dominant force.

This Sunday, July 19 it all comes to a bittersweet and yet epic close with a matchup the sporting gods could have only dreamt of. The reigning world champions Argentina going head-to-head against a brilliant Spain. Lionel Messi, the greatest of all time, will lineup against Lamine Yamal, the 19-year-old prodigal.

Argentina has likely played in the three most thrilling games of this tournament surviving Cape Verde, Egypt and then England in the semifinals. Now they face a Spanish side that cruised past tournament favorite France in a spectacular semifinal.

It is a clash of generational titans, bridging Messi’s legendary era with a ferocious, emerging new generation of talent.

When you look back at the historic 104-match schedule, the late-game heroics, the sheer continental scale, and an upcoming rule-breaking, star-studded final spectacle, this tournament has successfully redefined sporting entertainment. We are not just watching another iteration of a tournament; we are living through the golden era of the beautiful game. And beautiful it is!
